Kia ora tātou,

I’ve just come back from 4 days in Wellington at the International Jazz Festival where my school joined others in performing, workshopping and listening to outstanding International Musicians. These visiting musicians were generous and willing to impart their experience, ideas and knowledge to the next generation of musicians in judging and workshops.

Two things struck me this year. First was how effective the visiting musicians were in getting right down to the point, be it wise criticism or acclaim, and conveying that to the students. Secondly, was how well the students took criticism. With a short turnaround between bands, they had to be succinct and blunt. In most cases, the band then played a short section of music straight away, giving clear evidence that they were taking onboard the feedback. No hard feelings, no tears, just a desire to improve and be a better musician.
