Kia ora tātou,

Over the last 7 days, 100s of students took part in the Auckland KBB Music Festival and Wellington WEBO Festival. Concert Bands, Orchestras, Jazz Combos, Big Bands, Chamber Orchestras and ensembles in between took to the stage and performed. Earlier this month the NZ Concert Band Festival took place in Whangarei.

At WEBO, I was encouraged to see a number of ensembles that included young musicians, be it Intermediate-age or Year 9s that have only been playing for a few terms. In discussion with one Intermediate teacher, the spark for her students to form an orchestra came from a visit from a Secondary School Jazz Combo. If you run an ensemble or choir, how about performing at a nearby Intermediate School? If you are in an Intermediate school, contact one of the local Secondary Schools or youth ensembles to host a performance.

Thread of the week was a discussion of running a junior choir, with mainly girls, who don’t read music. Thanks for the great ideas that were contributed, including some new songs. Here is a list on TKI’s Teacher Resource Exchange that was made with the help of the Musicnet list a few years back.
