ICT in the Year 7 & 8 Faculty

May 18, 2012 by Rebekah Pearson   Comments (0)

We have an ICT Club ruinning in the faculty, there are 20 mmebers. Two ICT monitors from each HR meet weekly to learn new tips and tricks to assist teachers and students in class. The girls also showcase the skills they have learned in ICT Club at Levels Assesmbly this happens once a month.

Ultranet is also utilised in the faculty to share homework, notices, duties and to create discussion amongst the students.

We have started using Mathletics to support learning in mathematics. I have led a couple of PD sessions in Year 7 & 8 to help teachers group and level students, also to use a number of the tools in the teacher centre.

Our main ICT focus for Term 2 will be to utilise Mimio tools in the classroom programme.

Mathletics Year 7 & 8

May 18, 2012 by Rebekah Pearson   Comments (0)

I have worked with two of our year 7 teachers to assist with integrating Mathletics in their mathematics programme. As both teachers are new to using Mathletics we covered a number of the features available in the teachers centre. We looked at grouping students, how to show/ hide mathematical strands, assigning tasks, restricting levels in the LIVE section, the use of workbooks and how points, certificates and gold bars are gained.

I also showed the students how to use the many tools available to them to help solve mathematical problems. We looked at using the following: the concept section using the animated dictionary and the concept search, how to use the support window and to change the level of difficulty, we also looked at the hall of fame to motivate the students to complete activities for homework.

I will show the teachers how to use the problem solving section, the blog and the games section, so that they can introduce these areas to their students.

First Week Using Edmodo

May 18, 2012 by Celia Sheerin   Comments (0)

This week I have begun using Edmodo with my Year 3/4 class, primarily as a homework tool. Previously we had a class blog, and I made the switch to Edmodo in the hope that children would be more motivated to add their own ideas and comments. It has proved to be very popular with the class, notably with more reluctant writers and EAL students.

Here you can see a discussion thread started by one of my Japanese students about her cat. The homework task was to upload a picture to share with the class, and to tell us a little about the picture. Students were also required to ask questions about their classmates photos to earn a 'Questioning Badge'. Emma did a great job responding to the questions.

National Goal 4 Reflective Summary 2012

May 17, 2012 by Kate Dare   Comments (0)

The following is a summary of National Goal 4 for 2011 for the Mantar Cluster (Milestone 4).

National Goal: Family and whanau to actively participate in their child's learning.

Cluster Goal: Investigate, develop and implement ways to involve Family/Whanau in order to actively participate in and celebrate students learning success.

Cluster: Year 2 of Cluster Programme - Primary Cluster Years 0-8

Cluster Type: ICT PD

Context: With the increasing development of E-Learning tools and strategies within the Cluster schools, comes the need to keep whanau and communities informed of school happenings and student reporting through the use of ICTs. Within the Mantar Cluster this has meant the ongoing development of school websites as well as class blogs, wikis, parent portals and facebook pages.

Aims/Purpose

There are three key areas the Cluster identified as areas of development when ensuring meaningful connections are made with whanau and community:

  • Principals will be using professional reading, investigation, BES/enabling e-learning website, Tataiako, Ka Hikitia, Measureabke Gains Framework.
  • Family/whanau participating in learning experiences which will help them to support their children and opportunities to celebrate and share student learning successes.
  • Charter development reflects the commitment to actively inolve family and whanau.

Methods, Interventions and Actions:

Two schools have been using facebook to involve family/whanau in celebrating student learning and to communicate with the community (http://www.facebook.com/pages/St-James-Catholic-School-Palmerston-North/209913949027338,http://www.facebook.com/pages/Somerset-Crescent-School/322927401096969http://www.vln.school.nz/pg/blog/read/688708/active-family-whanau-involvement). St James' has been established for some time and is frequently visited by parents. Somerset Crescent's is a recent addition and came about from community consultation, requesting this as a way of communicating reminders/updates. It is still being actively promoted and more and more parents are joining up.

All schools use some form of 3-way conferences, incorporating an ICT component into this, to celebrate individual students' learning successes (http://www.vln.school.nz/pg/blog/read/688017/family-and-whanau-to-actively-participate-in-their-childs-learning).

Two schools have introduced 'Reading Together' which is a programme that directly involves parents being trained in reading to their children. This takes place within the school or community and teachers and parents work together to promote reading and improve student achievement (http://www.vln.school.nz/pg/blog/read/688708/active-family-whanau-involvement

http://www.vln.school.nz/pg/blog/read/688017/family-and-whanau-to-actively-participate-in-their-childs-learning)

Somerset Crescent school has introduced 'Cuppa and a Chat' every second Monday. The Fale Whanau is open for parents to come in, have a cup of tea and borrow various reading and mathematics resources that they can take home and use with their children to support home learning (http://www.vln.school.nz/pg/blog/read/688708/active-family-whanau-involvement).

At Somerset Crescent the prinicipal has read Tataiako and now plans to use the cultural competencies as part of the staff appraisal system (http://www.vln.school.nz/pg/blog/read/688706/using-professional-readings). St James' has also used the Enabling E-learning website to support strategic planning (http://www.vln.school.nz/pg/blog/read/688969/strategic-plan).

St James' Charter includes the development of an e-learning strategic plan, which includes a goal a 'Beyond the Classroom' goal of: "The school community is deliberately engaged in learning focussed discussions through and about the potential of ICTs." The E-learning planning framework has been used to support the development of this plan (http://www.vln.school.nz/pg/blog/read/688969/strategic-plan). Somerset Crescent has shared their Charter goals with the community and involved them in strategic planning (http://www.vln.school.nz/pg/blog/read/688697/strategic-planning).

Since the last milestone, the TeKids held a celebration evening to share their learning with parents/whanau and wider community (http://www.vln.school.nz/pg/blog/read/205368/tekids-celebration-evening).

Summary of Key Results:

  • Some Principals have been using professional readings and integrating them into effective practice.
  • All schools are actively investigating and trialling new ways of engaging family/whanu in learning experiences which will help them to support their children and opportunities to celebrate and share student learning success. A lot of these methods have an ICT component.
  • Schools' Charter development/strategic planning reflects the commitment to actively involve family and whanau.

Next Steps:

  • Principals need to continue to use and implement professional readings such as BES/Enabling E-Learning website, Taiaiako, Ka Hikitia, Measureable Gains Framework.

BYOD Agreement

May 17, 2012 by David Rankin   Comments (0)

Have been working on a BYOD agreement for school. Have come up with this draft so far - taking pieces from others I have found to morph my own.

Thanks to others who have helped.

I would welcome any comments.

Student Owned Devices

I would like my child to bring their own digital device to school for use in the classroom learning programme. I understand

 □  All devices brought to school are my child’s responsibility and the insurance for the device is my responsibility.

 □  That teachers will provide a locked cupboard in which my child may place their device when not in use. If my child does not use this facility then the school holds no responsibility for any loss or damage which might occur.

□  All devices must arrive at school each day fully charged and that my child may bring a charger for use during the day if required. However charging will be on a limited basis and is up to teacher discretion.

□  Devices brought to school are for the use of my child and they will not physically share their devices with other students. They will only to be used under adult supervision

□   Rules, including the cyber-safety policies, governing the use of any school-owned digital device will apply to student-owned devices, while they are at school, including adherence to the Copyright act.

□  Students are not permitted to transmit or post photographic images/videos of any person at school on public and/or social networking sites.

□  Students realise that printing from personal devices will not be permitted at school.

□  Students must comply with the teachers’ request to shut down or close the screen. Devices must be in silent mode and put away when asked by teachers.

□  The school retains the right to collect and examine any device that is suspected of causing problems or being in breach of the BYOD guidelines and/or cyber safety policy.

Please remember that the use of personal devices to support the educational experience is not a necessity but a privilege. When rules are abused, this privilege will be taken away.

I understand and will abide by the above BYOD guidelines and Cyber safety Policy. I also understand that any breach of these policies may result in the loss of my privilege and further disciplinary action by the school.
